Following the success of the group's first record, Parade Day (2016), and extensive touring, Sussex is back with a second album that will transport you to an equally extraordinary and singular musical universe.
With Emenau on vibraphone and pianica and Lutes on guitar, banjo, and vocals, The Ocean Wide is an eclectic, exhilarating journey — at times joyful, at times melancholy — that takes us improbably right to the very heart of American roots music.
Rob Lutes's much anticated 7th album, out officially on September 8, 2017, includes a slate of 12 new songs and the John Prine gem Rocky Mountain Time.
The soulful album features a roster of some of Canada's finest players, including Rob MacDonald, Bob Stagg, Andrew Horton, Mark Nelson, Joe Grass, Guy Bélanger, Josephine Von Soukonnov and Ian Kelly.
‟An absolutely charming mix of blues, jazz and folk.” - Metro Montreal
Featuring a unique mix of instruments on 11 diverse originals and the Randy Newman gem “Dayton, Ohio, 1903,” Parade Day represents a modern day love letter to the early jazz, blues and folk music that were the primary musical influences of band founders Rob Lutes and Michael Emenau.
The six-piece lineup includes Oscar nominated guitarist/composer Ben Charest (Les Triplettes de Belleville), violinist Josh Zubot (Patrick Watson), bassist Sage Reynolds (Jordan Officer, Tomas Hellman), trumpeter Ivanhoe Jolicoeur (les Cowboys Fringantes), noted vibraphonist/percussionist Michael Emenau and myself on vocals and acoustic fingerstyle guitar.

Rob MacDonald and I started playing together in the fall of 1996 when we did a series of launch shows for a blues compilation CD we were both on.
Since then, we’ve toured Canada, the US and Europe, performing hundreds of shows in theatres, bars, festivals, coffee houses and pretty much everything in between. Rob has also played on all four of my studio releases.
Over the years, many people have told me that Rob and I have a special kind of musical connection on stage, and they’ve encouraged us to release a live album. Well, to all of you, here it is.
The new CD was recorded on a cold, snowy Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the very intimate “Le Red Room” in Glenn Sutton, about an hour and a half from Montreal. Rob and I think it captures some of the magic we’ve experienced on the stage these past 15 years.
The fourth CD from singer-songwriter Rob Lutes. Produced by David Goodrich (Chris Smither, Jeffrey Foucault) and featuring Annabelle Chvostek, Rob MacDonald, Geoff Arsenault, Morgan Moore and Olivier Demers.
